The final step in installing tiles on walls or floors is grouting the joints. This is done using a special compound applied between the gaps in the tiles. The grout eliminates small imperfections and seams, gives the surface a finished look, and protects it from moisture, dust, and dirt. Therefore, it’s important to choose the right grout to ensure that the tiles look presentable for as long as possible.

Types of Grouts for Joints

The “CERAMA MARKET” store offers cement, epoxy, and silicone grouts at affordable prices from Ukrainian, Polish, Danish, and Spanish manufacturers.

Cement grout. Its base consists of cement and fillers that enhance performance properties (plasticizers, mineral components, and pigment). Advantages:

  • wear resistance;
  • elasticity;
  • smooth surface;
  • easy application;
  • slow setting;
  • easy to clean;
  • affordable price — from 249 UAH.

At the “CERAMA MARKET” store, cement mixtures are represented by a wide range of products:

  1. MIRA SUPERCOLOUR, SOPRO SAPHIR;
  2. MAPEI "Ультраколор Плюс";
  3. BUTECH COLORSTUK RAPID.

The attention-worthy option is the Cerazet cement grout, a Ukrainian-made product. Its antifungal effect, moisture resistance, and ability to withstand temperature fluctuations make it suitable for use on heated surfaces.

Epoxy grout. It consists of epoxy resin, a hardening and strength catalyst, and a filler (quartz sand).

Advantages:

  • strength;
  • durability;
  • density;
  • elasticity;
  • safety;
  • resistance to moisture, high temperatures, bacteria, dirt, and chemicals;
  • wide range of colors;
  • attractive appearance with long-lasting color retention.

Epoxy grout sets quickly (in about 30 minutes). During this time, the mixture should be applied correctly and any excess removed from the surface. The example of epoxy resin grout Schonox CF DESIGN (AB).

Silicone grout is made of silicone rubber and fillers.

Advantages:

  • elasticity;
  • smooth, fine-grained joint;
  • good adhesion to various surfaces;
  • hygroscopicity;
  • UV resistance;
  • low shrinkage coefficient;
  • color variety.

Silicone grout is recommended for use on joints between walls or between walls and floors. The setting time is about 15 minutes, so the mixture should be applied quickly. The MIRA SUPERSIL silicone grout is available for order at the “CERAMA MARKET” store, with a price starting from 571 UAH.

Criteria for Choosing Grout for Joints

When selecting grout, consider the following:

  • room specifics. For areas with low levels of contamination, normal humidity, and temperature, a cement-based mixture is suitable. In kitchens, bathrooms, or saunas, it’s better to use heat-resistant epoxy or silicone grout;
  • tile purpose. Floors and kitchen countertops get dirty more frequently, so it’s best to choose a grout that repels dirt. The optimal choice is epoxy grout;
  • width of the joints between tiles. Cement-based grout is used for joints from 1 to 20 mm, while epoxy and silicone grouts are versatile and suitable for a wider range. This information is usually indicated by the manufacturer in the product description;
  • tile and base material. The optimal grout for stone, metal, or glass tiles is silicone-based. For ceramic or porcelain tiles, cement or epoxy grout can be used;
  • color. Keep in mind that cement grout lightens after application, while epoxy and silicone grouts maintain their color. Specialists also advise against using white grout in areas where dirt tends to accumulate (such as kitchen work areas).

When it comes to color combinations, the most common option is grout that matches the tile color, either 1-2 shades lighter or darker. To create contrast, you can choose a filler that contrasts with the color of the surface. For brick joints, it’s better to choose white, beige, gray, or brown grout. When laying tiles of different colors, the grout tone is usually selected based on the lightest element.
